Anthony Shemayme, BSW
(He/Him)
Anthony Shemayme's journey began in the high desert plain landscape of Shiprock, NM on the Navajo Nation. In 2009, he ventured to Albuquerque, NM, where he found himself drawn to the vibrant local hip-hop scene. This pulsating environment stirred something deep within him, igniting a passion for rapping as a powerful tool of expression.
Anthony's artistry quickly transcended the local stages, pulling him into community efforts dedicated to social change and indigenous resistance. It was through these experiences that he began to fully embrace his cultural identity, embarking on a profound journey of reconnection.
For three and a half years, Anthony poured his heart into his work at La Plazita Institute. Engaging with middle and high school students through Foodcorps, he helped connect kids to healthy foods, fostering a sense of community and wellness. His dedication and impact led to his promotion as the Youth Reporting Service Coordinator, where he mentored pre-adjudicated youth navigating the juvenile court system.
Anthony's commitment to youth and community didn't stop there. As the Hiyupo Alliance Coordinator at the Native American Community Academy, he oversaw after-school programs designed to support students' social and emotional well-being.
With a Bachelor's in Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University under his belt, Anthony is now setting his sights on a Master's Degree, with a focus on clinical therapy and family work. His journey is a testament to the power of resilience, culture, and the transformative force of community engagement.
